Drama 10: Theatre Appreciation

Course Description:
This course is designed to give the student a general knowledge and appreciation of the theatre as an art form. It will include a study of the elements of play structure, types of drama, a theatre vocabulary, historical development, and the contributions to the theatrical experience of the actor, director, designers, playwrights and audience.

Texts:
Theater: The Lively Art (4th edition) by Wilson and Goldfarb (required)
Theatergoer’s Guide by Wilson and Goldfarb (required)
Readings in the Lively Dramatic Arts by John White (required)

Course Objectives:
1. To experience the reading of play scripts in light of their production possibilities, audience appeal, demands on actors, technicians, and designers.
2. To learn to analyze the script and the production elements as a process and as a product of artistic merit.
3. To understand how historically theatre reflects the chronicle of Man’s universal concerns.
4. To experience the attendance at live performances of plays and to be involved in discussions about those common experiences.

Procedure:
1. Class sessions will be a combination of lectures, discussions, presentations, films, video, slides, etc.
2. Participation by class members is expected and will improve your grade.

Requirements/Grading:
1. Strict adherence to district attendance policies. Excessive absences for any reason may critically affect the final grade. Extra credit for 0-3 absences. It is the individual student’s responsibility to drop classes. Last day to drop without a “W” is Feb. 7. Last day to drop with a “W” is April 25.

2. Successful completion of 5 examinations on text and lecture material .
Fifth exam is the Final (not comprehensive)

3. Papers or quizzes will be assigned for the reading of 5 plays in the text Readings in the Lively Dramatic Arts . Papers of 750-900 words will be assigned for 2 of the plays. Papers are due on dates specified in the syllabus. In-class quizzes will be given on the other three plays on the day specified in the syllabus. (125 –175 total points possible)

4. Attendance at two plays, one of which must be the Delta Drama production of ALL IN THE TIMING, followed by a written report on each. Use your Theatergoer’s Guide to help in writing your reports. Reports are to be typed 1 1/2 spaces and at least 750 words. They must be accompanied by a ticket stub or program attached. (80 points total)

5. Research Paper or Lab Hours. A 1500 word minimum (not including Bibliography) research paper on a theatre topic of your choice. The paper may not be just a biographical one on a playwright. Do not try to explain the entire history of the Greek Theatre in this short paper. The instructor will give you a series of suggested topics. Use MLA style in citing works from your research in the body of the paper.

10 hours work in scene and/or costume shop may be substituted for the paper. (90 points)
