Retake Exam

New Retake Policy

Effective May 22, 2009

 

The paper/pencil multiple choice retake test for reading and math will be discontinued as well as the composition retake test.  Instead, students will be allowed retesting for all subjects on the ACE computer test (COMPASS).

 

New students begin with Step 1 and Continuing students begin with Step 2, below, and you may retest through the remaining sequence of Steps as follows:

Step 1   Students take ACE (COMPASS).
 
Step 2   Students may retake COMPASS after 30 days ( No Appointment Necessary).
 
Step 3   Students may take retake COMPASS again in one year and one time a year thereafter (No Appointment Necessary).

In some cases counselors may grant an earlier retake of an assessment test or may provide assistance with proper course placement and retesting issues.  Please see your counselor for advisement on possible further appeals regarding course placement and retesting.


Questions and Answers
 

Q: I am not happy with my ACE assessment results, how soon may I retake the computer  test?

A: You may retake the ACE computer test (COMPASS) after waiting 30 days from your initial or first time ACE assessment.
 

Q: How many times may I retake the computer test?  

A: You may retake the computer test one time after waiting 30 days. Then, you cannot take the test again for one calendar year, unless you see a counselor.
 
Q: Can a counselor give me permission to retake the assessment after I tried the test on my own after 30 days so I don’t have to wait one year?
A: Yes. If you retested after waiting 30 days and want to try again, a counselor may give you permission to retest before one calendar year. However, the counselor can only give this permission one time. Please speak to your counselor about further appeals for course placement and retesting.

Q: Is there any way I can retake the test before 30 days?
A: Yes. A counselor may give you permission to retest before the 30 day waiting period. You may then take the test again after waiting 30 days. Then, you may take the test in one calendar year, and one time a year thereafter.
 
Q: Do I need to take the ACE e-orientation over again?
A: No. The e-orientation is only required one time.
 
Q: Do I need to take all 3 subjects over again -- reading skills, writing skills, and math skills?
A: No. You decide which test or tests you want to retake.
 
Q: If I want to improve my composition (English) placement, do I just take the writing skills test?
A: No. Your placement is based, in part, on the reading skills and writing skills tests, so you must take both tests to try to improve your composition (English) placement. It doesn’t matter what level reading you are currently at, both tests are required each time you retake for composition placement.

Calculators are allowed for the computerized math retake exam.
