Studio Art, Associate in Arts for TransferPENDING APPROVAL This program is designed for students planning to transfer to a California State University (CSU) with a major in Studio Art. The program will provide the student with an introductory foundation in art principles and practices. Selected courses include art history and both two-and three-dimensional studio practice. All of the courses are designed to encourage and develop a visually literate, creative, and critically thinking student. Visually literate individuals are better able to understand the world around them. They are able to critique the increasing number of visual images that exist in contemporary society and are capable of communicating with a broader audience in a more immediate manner than individuals who are only subconsciously aware of the effect that visual systems have. While other academic studies focus on communication in written and aural form, the arts focus on visual language. Students of the arts learn to comprehend and produce statements in a semiotic system that is not fully examined in any other field of study. It is this focus on visual literacy that distinguishes the arts from other fields. Invariably, the courses emphasize that students apply these concepts, aesthetic perception, and critical thinking to their own lives and the world around them. The study and production of the visual arts helps connect students to themselves, their culture, and their civilization; it builds an understanding of diversity and the multicultural dimensions of our world, values that are reflected in the college mission statement.
