The Emphasis in Elementary Education Teacher Preparation is designed for the student planning to transfer to a four year college or university. With careful planning the student will be able to complete lower division transfer preparation while concurrently completing the Associate in Arts degree. This degree is appropriate for the student who desires to attend the University of California, California State University, and many independent colleges and universities.
This degree is NOT appropriate for the student who is pursuing a Baccalaureate degree in majors requiring extensive lower division major preparation.
Careful course selection is essential for successful transfer in a timely fashion without completing unnecessary coursework. Students are encouraged to see a counselor for assistance in developing an education plan that will identify the lower major preparation and general education coursework that corresponds to the intended transfer school.
The counselor will assist the student in determining the appropriateness for the selected major in relationship to declared educational goals. Students may consult www.ASSIST.org for current course articulation in their major. Please refer to the "Essential Transfer Information Checklist" located in the transfer section of the current College Catalog.
Counseling appointments may be scheduled by calling the Guidance and Counseling Office at (209) 954-5650. Failure to consult with a counselor may unnecessarily delay progress toward transfer.
The Elementary Education Teacher Preparation Area of Emphasis is designed for the student who elects to complete a Baccalaureate degree and a California Multiple Subject Credential. With informed course selection, this degree will allow the student to satisfy lower division teacher preparation requirements at the University of California, California State University, and many independent colleges and universities.
NOTE: Elementary Education Teacher Preparation programs vary widely in the required lower division preparation necessary for admission to specific campuses. When selecting courses for this Area of Emphasis, it is critical that the student work with a counselor and visit ASSIST.org to ensure proper course selection for admittance to the four-year campus program of choice. Random selection of courses from this list will NOT sufficiently prepare the student for admission to a teacher preparation program.
Transfer majors appropriate for this area of emphasis include but are not limited to: Liberal Studies, Liberal Studies Diversified Major, Education, and Special Education.
Complete one of the following general education patterns with a grade of "C" or better in each course:

Complete 60 transferable units, to include general education, area of emphasis, and electives as needed with a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. Please note that successful transfer to UC, CSU and many independent colleges and universities or in majors that are impacted will require a higher GPA. See your counselor, the transfer campus catalog, or www.ASSIST.org for current transfer and GPA requirements.
