Emphasis in Arts and Humanities, Associate in Arts
PENDING APPROVAL
The Emphasis in Arts and Humanities is designed for the student planning to transfer to a four year college or university. With careful planning the student will be able to complete lower division transfer preparation while concurrently completing the Associate in Arts degree. This degree is appropriate for the student who desires to attend the University of California, California State University, and many independent colleges and universities.
This degree is NOT appropriate for the student who is pursuing a Baccalaureate degree in majors requiring extensive lower division major preparation.
Careful course selection is essential for successful transfer in a timely fashion without completing unnecessary coursework. Students are encouraged to see a counselor for assistance in developing an education plan that will identify the lower major preparation and general education coursework that corresponds to the intended transfer school.
The counselor will assist the student in determining the appropriateness for the selected major in relationship to declared educational goals. Students may consult www.ASSIST.org for current course articulation in their major. Please refer to the "Essential Transfer Information Checklist" located in the transfer section of the current College Catalog.
Counseling appointments may be scheduled by calling the Guidance and Counseling Office at (209) 954-5650. Failure to consult with a counselor may unnecessarily delay progress toward transfer.
Courses in the arts and humanities are those which focus on the cultural activities and artistic expressions of human beings. Such courses include introductory or integrative courses in arts, foreign languages, history, literature, philosophy, religion, theatre. These courses are designed to help the student develop an awareness of the ways in which people throughout the ages in different cultures have responded to themselves and the world around them in artistic and cultural creation, and help the student develop aesthetic understanding and the ability to make value judgments. Transfer majors appropriate for this Area of Emphasis include but are not limited to: Art, English, Fashion, Graphic Arts, Interior Design, Foreign Language, Linguistics, Music, Philosophy, and Theatre Arts.
