Melvin Boles is a native of Richmond, California and a graduate of Richmond High in 1960. After graduation, Mr. Boles joined the US Navy and served from 1960 to 1969 on the USS Ranger aircraft carrier, and later, on the USS Elten troop carrier. He is a Viet Nam era vet and merchant seaman.
Melvin moved to San Jose in 1969 to attend San Jose City College. In 1972, he enrolled at San Jose State University, graduating in 1974 with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. While attending San Jose State, Mr. Boles worked as a Veteran’s Outreach Counselor. After graduation, Melvin became Director of the Phillips Junior College Admissions Department. An entrepreneur, Mr. Boles also owned several restaurants and an arcade.
A job transfer eventually brought Mr. Boles to Stockton in 2000. Among his interests was working with the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce. After graduating from the Chamber’s leadership program, Mr. Boles was appointed to the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
Community service has always been foremost in Melvin Boles life. He served on the United Way of San Joaquin Committee; was Vice President of the African American Chamber of Commerce and has served on the San Joaquin Grand Jury. Presently, Mr. Boles is serving on the Commission of the Aging. Not done being an entrepreneur, Mr. Boles also owns an ATM business and credit card service.
Melvin Boles has been married to wife, Diane, for over 40 years. He is the proud father of two sons, Marc, Daniel, and has two beautiful granddaughters, Janessa and Olivia.
“I am proud to have been chosen to sit on the Citizens Oversight Committee” says Melvin. “I hope to bring experience, new ideas and continuous growth to Delta Community College.”
